10 Common Helium Hotspot Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Mapping Network sells hardware only. We make no promises about Helium network rewards, token value or earnings, which can change at any time. Check current details on the official Helium network page before you buy.
Most hotspot problems come from the installation, not the hardware. These are the ten mistakes we see most often, and how to fix each one.
- Skipping research. Read up on placement, antennas and cabling before you install. You're already doing that.
- Doubling up coverage. A hotspot right beside another one covers the same area. Check the Helium network map and pick a spot that adds coverage.
- Overthinking the "best" antenna. The right antenna depends on your terrain. High gain suits flat open land; 3 to 6 dBi often suits towns. See our antenna guide.
- Leaving the antenna indoors and low. Get it outside and high, with a clear line of sight. Use a proper mount.
- Using thin cable on long runs. Use LMR-400 for longer runs, or move the hotspot into an outdoor enclosure beside the antenna.
- Relying on Wi-Fi. Wire the hotspot to your router with Ethernet for a stable connection.
- Skipping lightning protection. Every outdoor antenna run needs a surge arrestor.
- Not monitoring. Check the hotspot's status in the Helium app or a tool like Hotspotty, and fix problems early.
- Ignoring updates. Keep the firmware current; most manufacturers push updates automatically.
- Not asking the community. The Helium Discord is a good place to get setup help.
